Sorry that I'm coming to this after the event! My recommendation would have been a Rioja Reserva. What did you actually decide upon - and how good a match was it?
I went for a St Hallett Grenache Shiraz blend and as with all their wines it was excellent, juicy and the ripe berry fruit worked well with the savoury stifado.
