Unfortuantely my favourite bargain wine isn't sold in the UK. Campo Viego Tempranillo (pink label) is sold in Spain for 2 Euros and it a perfectly good mid week red
I remember, with much warm fondness, discovering the delights of Bulgarian reds as a student. They were considerably cheaper than most more accepted and known red wines, but with a pleasant amount of body and flavour. Many a joyous and amusing evening was bouyed along with a plentiful supply of this cheap tipple.
yes, I remember the bulgarian counrty wine days, good stuff for the price, does anyone think that half price wines are as good as the full price equivalent? I bought some half price Penfolds which was originally £20 a bottle and it was so much better than any £10 wine I had ever tried
There are some wines that are 'half price' which i don't think i've ever seen not on offer! Ilsa Negra and First Cape are never full price and they are definately not worth what the shops claim the full price is
My favourite bargain wine of Tesco:Gran Tesoro 2009 Garnachahttp://www.winefromatumbler.com/post/7650278793/wine-of-the-week-july-15-2011
I only bought 6 bottles of the roero Arneis recently at £4 odds per bot-I should have cleared out your warehouse!!ps next best is the Verdejo from Rueda
A cheap but quaffable midweek red is Vina Alabali's Tempranillo which seems to be consistently on offer at less than £4. It's obviously not very complex but quite smooth.
I'd love to pretend I'm not a wine snob but sometimes I can't help it, I definitely love great value wine. It's all about Tesco Finest Picpoul - so much more interesting than Kiwi Sauvignon!
Chilean Carmenere is a definite must for a value red wine - especially in this cold weather - it's so warming!!
I almost forgot - bottles of Fitou in France for €1.99. Perfect for apres-ski!
The 150 cl Isla Negra reds for £5 from tesco tasted a whole lot better than normal Chileans; definitely a sweet taste in my mouth. Pity I'm down to my last case
Picpoul de Pinet. I've yet to see a bottle over a tenner and I've yet to be disappointed by this fab southern french wine.
I am certainly a reverser on occasion and high on my list would be Verdicchio (Castello di Jesi)
I agree about Picpoul - but in France it is incredibly cheap; about 1.5 euros a bottle in one supermarket known for extra value! Also I buy tesco South African white and red for cooking but we end up glugging it as it is cheap and cheerful for everday drinking.Tend to buy expensive wines when on offer from wine merchants and supermarkets - look at Wine Searcher to find bargains. There is so much info available on the internet if you have time to look. Also find that you can still haggle with independent shops.
Said it before but my favourite bargain wine of the moment is half-priced (at Tesco) Okahu Bay Marlborough Sauvingon Blanc - a bargain at £6 a bottle!
Marqués de Caranó Gran Selección - £3.80 and perfectly good as a "mid weeker". Works brilliant with tomato based pasta sauces eg Amtraciana or just grand on its own. A bargain.
Always buy a bottle or two of Blaxland Estate Shiraz when on special offer which at my local Tesco seems to be quite often. Terrific big flavoured hit of dark fruit, coffee and Vanilla which a little faint trace of mint. At around £5 (on offer) excellent value.
Morse code Shiraz when on offer around £5. A big hoofing red with rich, dark fruit which I can finally enjoy with my BBQ tomorrow.
I have never been disappointed by ANYTHING from Concha Y Toro from their bottom priced ranges ( love their better ranges though)Incidentally does anyone one know what happened to Don Darius wines always a winner for midweek in days gone by, we always opened their red 2 DAYS before we drank it as it just improved when oxidised !
