Looking for some wine and not sure what to buy? Let the UK’s wine experts give you a helping hand. Every week in the national newspapers and magazines, some of the UK’s best known wine buffs recommend wines for their readers. Below is a selection of wines from Tesco recommended over the weekend:
Andrew Neather, Evening Standard, Thursday 19th July
Finest* Swartland Chenin Blanc 2011
"Adie Badenhorst is a trailblazer for Swartland, one of South Africa's most promising areas: he makes this very creditable chenin blanc for Tesco. Fresh but with some weight and depth - good value for this quality (and more interesting than most South African chenins)."
Jane MacQuitty, The Times, Saturday 21st July
Finest* Saint Mont 2011
"New on Tesco's shelves this summer is this enticing gros manseng grape-dominant Gascon white, topped up with the rare, southwest varieties petit courbu and arrufiac. Plaimont is three different co-operatives rolled into one and, despite the large quantities of wine produced, quality like this waxy, lemon, Granny Smith apple and grapefruit zest-styled summer aperitif white, is always high."
Terry Kirby, Independent on Sunday, Sunday 22nd July
Finest* Pouilly Fume 2009
"Another great French name given the Finest* treatment and winner of the Great-Value-White-Under-£12, this Loire wine is as typical example of European Sauvignon Blanc as can be - a lovely summer bottle, excellent with prime flat white fish. Modern wine-making techniques, with stainless steel vats and no sign of oak, result in a pure, clean taste of gooseberries, grass and lemon zest and a finish that is perfectly crisp and dry."
Susy Atkins, Stella (Sunday Telegraph), Sunday 22nd July
Finest* Tingleup Riesling 2011
"A very useful summer white this, with hugely tangy, refreshing lemon and lime, and lip-smacking, bracing acidity."
