Wine made simple

Weekly wine picks: five favourites from the people who know

Weekly Picks 020712

Looking for some wine and not sure what to buy? Let the UK’s wine experts give you a helping hand. Every week in the national newspapers and magazines, some of the UK’s best known wine buffs recommend wines for their readers. Below is a selection of wines from Tesco recommended over the weekend:

Victoria Moore, Daily Telegraph, 30th June 2012

Jacob’s Creek Cool Harvest Sauvignon Blanc 2011, £8.49

“They bottle this in pale green glass with a white label, which makes it look like it feels to run under a sprinkler on a lawn. It’s a bit sweet, at about 10g per litre, has a gentle spritz, a light lemony touch and is very easy drinking. I’d recommend serving it over ice.”

Hamish Anderson, Daily Telegraph, 30th June 2012

Finest Teroldego 2009, £7.99

“Toroldego is one of the great reds of northern Italy. Here its rustic side has been tamed and fashioned into a gloriously supple, juicy glass of cherries and spice. Don’t be afraid of giving this an hour in the fridge to focus the flavours.”

Matthew Jukes, Daily Mail, 30th June 2012

Finest Navarra Rosé 2011, £6.99

“This is a chunkier rosé than usual – halfway to being a red wine – which is its charm.  With sturdy, juicy red fruit and a lovely smooth palate, this is a delightful, summery, chillable wine with an almost inexhaustible food-matching repertoire.”

Matthew Jukes, Daily Mail, 30th June 2012

McWilliam’s Hanwood Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, £51.24/6 bottles Tesco.com

“My favourite, basic, classy Aussie cabernet with four years under its belt. It’s drinking perfectly, with scrumptious cassis notes and a twist of savoury oak.”

Jamie Goode, Sunday Express, 1st July 2012

Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay, £11.99

“The relatively new Limari wine region in Chile is proving to be a brilliant source for full-flavoured Chardonnays such as this one. Its bold, toasty melon and peach flavours would stand up well to the flavour of the beetroot and Wensleydale cheese salad.”

Cheers!
