Jubilee Blog: Street Party

Street party

There are few things more quintessentially British than a good old street party and they’ll be happening across the land as neighbours come together for Jubilee celebrations. They seem to bring out a wonderful community spirit, not to mention endless lengths of bunting! But, really, the essential ingredients for a successful street party are good friends, neighbours, food and wine.

And as with all good celebrations, things are best kicked off with a glass of the fizzy stuff. This one – Diamond Jubilee Brut Reserve – really was made for the big occasion; it says so on the label! Only once everyone has had a paper cup of Cava (tastes just as good when you are with a good crowd) then it is time to move on to the trestle tabletop feast.

Here, the salmon and horseradish tartlets need a zingy white wine to balance the delicate flavour of the fish and the slight bite of the horseradish. Step forward Tesco Finest Tingleup Riesling 2010, a brilliant balance of lemon and lime fruit with lip-smacking zingy freshness.

Next up are the chorizo Scotch eggs, traditional British fayre but here pepped up with the spice of chorizo. Wine-wise, this calls for a red with lots of juicy fruit and freshness and the Tesco Finest Douro 2010 can do just that. Made from a blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Francesa grapes (the same grape varieties used as part of the blend for Port, also made in the Douro Valley), this is such a lovely, summer-pudding-fruit style wine. You can almost taste the sunshine in the grapes, so bright is the fruit.

Finally, there is the very best of British puddings, the trifle! Now, this one is deliciously sweet so needs a wine that can match it for sweetness (always a good rule of thumb when matching puddings with wine, try and match the sweetness). Here, the award-winning Tesco Finest Sauternes 2007 is a perfect match, made from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and a touch of Muscadelle grown in vineyards in Bordeaux. Stick your nose in the glass and smell that wonderfully honeyed fruit! In between mouthfuls of trifle, obviously…
